As analytics continues to permeate the marketing ecosystem, data is evermore critical. Making decisions based on flawed data is more detrimental than making a decision with no data at all. Although this insight will focus more on Google Analytics data, the fundamental principle applies across all sources of data.
At EpikOne, we have configured and audited Google Analytics for hundreds of websites ranging from emerging e-commerce companies to Fortune 500 organizations and we have rarely encountered a flawless Google Analytics implemenation across all key metrics. The instances of flawed implementations range from improper page tags to flawed paid search campaigns causing organic and paid keywords to be grouped together. In fact, a free service we offer, SiteScan, has scanned nearly 55 million pages across 80,000 sites, and found that only 54% of pages are tagged properly with Google Analytics.
The responsibility of data quality inevitably ties back to the individuals, departments and vendors, who contribute to the implementation and ongoing management of analytics. It comes down to people and process and in order to successfully configure analytics for a baseline of quality data, a well defined process needs to be followed with an end goal of analyzing quality data. Review page tagging across all web properties, ensure that all advertising campaigns are being tracked effectively and key conversion goals are being measured. As you move forward in your 2009 marketing initiatives, focus on accountability, and make sure to take the time to evaluate data quality.
